10x buffer concentrate to 1x working buffer is the classic lab dilution — but concentrates come in all strengths. Enter yours and get the exact volumes.
How to use this calculator
- Enter concentrate PPM.
- Enter target and final volume.
- Measure concentrate, add to water, mix, verify pH.
The formula
V_conc = C_target × V_final ÷ C_conc.
What the inputs mean
The target is the concentration you want, in PPM. The volume is how much liquid you are treating. The result tells you exactly how much product to add.
Worked example
10x PBS concentrate → 1x in 1 L: use 100 mL concentrate + 900 mL water.
Quick reference
| Concentrate | To make 1 L working |
|---|---|
| 10x | 100 mL |
| 20x | 50 mL |
Add concentrate to water.
Where you will actually use this
pH depends on getting the dilution right.
- Cell culture
- Molecular biology
- HPLC buffers
Mistakes that give wrong answers
- pH shifts after dilution (verify!)
- Using degraded concentrates
Key takeaways
- Formula: Concentrate volume = Target × Final ÷ Concentrate
- Remember: Add concentrate to water.
- Watch out for: pH shifts after dilution (verify!)
- Next step: run your own numbers in the calculator above, then verify with a measurement — calculated values are only as good as the inputs.
Frequently asked questions
Does dilution change buffer pH?
Slightly, sometimes — always verify after diluting.
