Phosphorus powers roots and flowers — flowering formulas push it higher for a reason. But P also locks out other nutrients when overdone. Get the dose right with this calculator.
How to use this calculator
- Enter volume.
- Enter target P PPM.
- Enter fertilizer P%.
- Get grams.
The formula
Grams = target PPM × liters ÷ 1,000 ÷ P fraction. Note: fertilizer labels show P₂O₅ — convert (P = P₂O₅ × 0.44) or use elemental values.
What the inputs mean
The target is the concentration you want, in PPM. The volume is how much liquid you are treating. The phosphorus content, elemental p (%) corrects for product strength, because most products are not 100% active ingredient. The result tells you exactly how much phosphorus fertilizer to add.
Worked example
100 L, 60 PPM P, using phosphoric-acid-based fert at 30% P: 60 × 100 ÷ 1,000 ÷ 0.30 = 20 g.
Quick reference
| Stage | Typical P PPM |
|---|---|
| Vegetative | 30–50 |
| Flowering | 50–100 |
Elemental P, not P₂O₅.
Where you will actually use this
P is the easiest nutrient to over-apply "just in case".
- Flowering stage feeding
- Root development
- Transplant solutions
Mistakes that give wrong answers
- Reading P₂O₅ as elemental P (it is 44% P)
- Over-applying and locking out zinc/iron
Key takeaways
- Formula: P fertilizer (g) = Target P PPM × Volume (L) ÷ 1,000 ÷ P fraction
- Remember: Elemental P, not P₂O₅.
- Watch out for: Reading P₂O₅ as elemental P (it is 44% P)
- Next step: run your own numbers in the calculator above, then verify with a measurement — calculated values are only as good as the inputs.
