Pool Salt PPM Calculator

Saltwater pools run best at 2,700–3,400 PPM of salt — too low and the chlorinator starves, too high and the water tastes like the sea. Tell the calculator your pool volume and current salt level, and it tells you exactly how many bags to buy.

Saltwater pools run best at 2,700–3,400 PPM of salt — too low and the chlorinator starves, too high and the water tastes like the sea. Tell the calculator your pool volume and current salt level, and it tells you exactly how many bags to buy.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter pool volume in liters.
  2. Enter current salt PPM (from a test strip).
  3. Enter target PPM (3,200 is typical).
  4. Get the kilograms of salt to add.

The formula

Salt needed (kg) = Target PPM × Pool volume (L) ÷ 1,000,000

Salt mass (kg) = (target PPM − current PPM) × volume (L) ÷ 1,000,000.

What the inputs mean

The target is the concentration you want, in PPM. The volume is how much liquid you are treating. The current level is what is already in the water — the calculator only adds the difference, so you never double-dose. The result tells you exactly how much pool salt to add.

Worked example

A 60,000 L pool at 2,400 PPM, targeting 3,200 PPM: (3,200 − 2,400) × 60,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 48 kg of salt.

Quick reference

Pool sizeSalt for 0→3,200 PPM
25,000 L80 kg
50,000 L160 kg
75,000 L240 kg

From zero salt; subtract what is already in the water.

Where you will actually use this

Salt is cheap but hauling bags is not fun. One precise calculation beats three trips to the pool store.

  • New saltwater pool startup
  • Seasonal salt top-ups
  • After heavy rain dilution
  • Salt cell replacement checks

Mistakes that give wrong answers

  • Adding salt with the pump off (it settles)
  • Not accounting for existing salt
  • Using table salt with anti-caking agents

Key takeaways

  • Formula: Salt needed (kg) = Target PPM × Pool volume (L) ÷ 1,000,000
  • Remember: From zero salt; subtract what is already in the water.
  • Watch out for: Adding salt with the pump off (it settles)
  • Next step: run your own numbers in the calculator above, then verify with a measurement — calculated values are only as good as the inputs.

Frequently asked questions

What salt PPM does a saltwater pool need?

2,700–3,400 PPM; 3,200 is the common target.

How much salt for a 50,000 L pool from zero?

3,200 × 50,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 160 kg.

Can salt PPM be too high?

Yes — above ~3,500 PPM most chlorinators warn, and water tastes salty.
