Can you calculate pH from PPM?
Sometimes, but PPM alone is not sufficient. You also need the chemical identity or molecular weight and a suitable dissociation model.
Does 1 PPM have a fixed pH?
No. Different chemicals at the same PPM can produce very different pH values.
What information is needed for PPM to pH?
At minimum, the concentration, molecular weight, and an appropriate acid/base dissociation assumption are needed for a simplified estimate.
Is this pH calculation exact?
No. The simplified model is an estimate and may not represent activity coefficients, buffering, multiple equilibria, or concentrated-solution effects.
What is Ka used for?
Ka describes the acid dissociation equilibrium and is used here for the weak-acid approximation.
Can I use this for a buffered solution?
Not reliably with the simplified model. Buffer chemistry requires additional information about the acid/base pair and equilibrium conditions.
