Food-contact sanitizing needs 50–200 PPM chlorine — strong enough to kill, weak enough to not need rinsing. Enter your sink or bucket volume and get the bleach milliliters.
How to use this calculator
- Enter water volume.
- Enter target (50–200 for food contact).
- Get mL of regular bleach.
- Test with a strip.
The formula
mL = target PPM × liters ÷ (bleach% × 10,000).
What the inputs mean
The target is the concentration you want, in PPM. The volume is how much liquid you are treating. The bleach strength (%) corrects for product strength, because most products are not 100% active ingredient. The result tells you exactly how much bleach to add.
Worked example
20 L at 100 PPM with 5% bleach: 100 × 20 ÷ 50,000 = 40 mL.
Quick reference
| Water | Bleach for 100 PPM (5%) |
|---|---|
| 5 L | 10 mL |
| 20 L | 40 mL |
Regular unscented bleach.

- Restaurants
- Food processing
- Daycare sanitizing
Mistakes that give wrong answers
- Using scented bleach
- No test strips to verify
Key takeaways
- Formula: Bleach (mL) = Target PPM × Water (L) ÷ bleach PPM
- Remember: Regular unscented bleach.
- Watch out for: Using scented bleach
- Next step: run your own numbers in the calculator above, then verify with a measurement — calculated values are only as good as the inputs.
