Preservatives and additives have legal PPM maximums — 200 PPM here, 1,000 there. This converts the limit into grams for your actual batch size so you stay compliant.
How to use this calculator
- Enter batch size in kg.
- Enter the regulatory limit PPM.
- Get max grams.
- Stay at or below it.
The formula
Grams = limit PPM × batch kg ÷ 1,000.
What the inputs mean
The target is the concentration you want, in PPM. The batch size is how much liquid you are treating. The result tells you exactly how much additive to add.
Worked example
500 kg batch, 200 PPM limit → max 100 g additive.
Quick reference
| Batch | Max grams at 200 PPM |
|---|---|
| 100 kg | 20 g |
| 500 kg | 100 g |
| 1,000 kg | 200 g |
At the regulatory maximum.
Where you will actually use this
Over-limit additives mean rejected batches and recalls.
- Food manufacturing
- Beverage formulation
- Regulatory compliance
Mistakes that give wrong answers
- Confusing additive PPM with ingredient percent
- Not documenting the calculation
Key takeaways
- Formula: Additive (g) = Limit PPM × Batch (kg) ÷ 1,000
- Remember: At the regulatory maximum.
- Watch out for: Confusing additive PPM with ingredient percent
- Next step: run your own numbers in the calculator above, then verify with a measurement — calculated values are only as good as the inputs.
