PPT to PPM Calculator
Regulatory documents love PPT, but most people think in PPM. If a limit is written as 30,000 PPT and you want to know what that means in plain PPM, divide by a million — you get 0.03 PPM. This calculator runs that direction.

Regulatory documents love PPT, but most people think in PPM. If a limit is written as 30,000 PPT and you want to know what that means in plain PPM, divide by a million — you get 0.03 PPM. This calculator runs that direction.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the concentration in PPT.
- The tool divides it by 1,000,000.
- Read the result in PPM.
- Compare it with PPM-based limits or specifications.
The formula
Since 1 PPM contains 1,000,000 PPT, going from the finer scale to the coarser one means dividing. PPT ÷ 1,000,000 gives PPM on the identical basis.
What the units mean
PPT (parts per trillion) — one part per trillion parts. Used for ultra-trace analysis where PPM values would be unreadably small, such as dioxins, PFAS, or pharmaceutical impurities.
PPM (parts per million) — one part of solute per million parts of the total mixture. The workhorse unit for trace concentrations in water, air, and food.
Worked example
A regulation sets a limit of 50,000 PPT for a contaminant. In PPM: 50,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.05 PPM. Your lab reports 0.04 PPM, so you are under the limit.
Quick reference
| PPT | PPM |
|---|---|
| 1,000 | 0.001 |
| 10,000 | 0.01 |
| 100,000 | 0.1 |
| 1,000,000 | 1 |
| 5,000,000 | 5 |
Pure scale conversion on the same concentration basis.
Where you will actually use this
Useful when a certificate of analysis or regulation quotes PPT but your internal specifications, instruments, or team discussions all use PPM.
- Reading PPT-based regulations in PPM terms
- Converting certificates of analysis
- Comparing lab results with internal PPM specs
- Training staff who think in PPM
Mistakes that give wrong answers
- Dividing by 1,000 instead of 1,000,000
- Mixing up which direction the factor goes
- Assuming PPT always means parts per trillion (check the document)
Key takeaways
- Formula: PPM = PPT ÷ 1,000,000
- Remember: Pure scale conversion on the same concentration basis.
- Watch out for: Dividing by 1,000 instead of 1,000,000
- Next step: run your own numbers in the calculator above, then verify with a measurement — calculated values are only as good as the inputs.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert PPT to PPM?
Divide the PPT value by 1,000,000.
What is 1,000,000 PPT in PPM?
Exactly 1 PPM.
What is 500 PPT in PPM?
500 PPT equals 0.0005 PPM.
Why are limits sometimes written in PPT?
Because the numbers stay readable — 0.00003 PPM is harder to work with than 30 PPT.
Is the conversion exact?
Yes, it is a pure scale change with no physical assumptions.
